The Kashmir dispute between the Muslims and the Indian forces, which began when the Indian government set aside land in Kashmir for Hindu religious pilgrimages, has escalated to Muslim outcry for Kashmir's secession from India. Since the beginning of the armed conflict in Kashmir in 1989, 10,000 people have disappeared after being arrested by the Indian security forces. Founded in 1994, The Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons has been struggling to find out the whereabouts of their missing beloved ones. 

  • Name: Muagal (woman holding picture) has lost her son, Showket Ahmed Paul. He was taken away by the police forces who suspected him of being a member of a Kashmirian resistance group. His mother protested and tried to set herself on fire, but the police was indifferent. It has been 5 years since he was arrested.
  • Name: Hajira Sofi .during a demo in srinagar looking at the photo of her son .She has lost her son, Bashir Ahmed Sofi, who lived in Bandipore. Bashir was the owner of a bakery. He was taken away 12 years ago by the Indian forces. He has not been seen ever since
  • Name: Rozy Ahmed Ganie, on the right. 15 years ago 5 men knocked on their door asking for help to find their way back home. Her father, Riyaz Ahmed Ganie, went along with them to show them the way and never came back
  • Name: unknown. The  woman, who lives in Haba Kadal in downtown Srinagar, has lost her son, Nazir Ahmad. Nazir was a school teacher. One day, on his way to school, he was arrested by the Indian police. He has since disappeared
  • Many women in Kashmir have lost sons either to the militants or to security forces. As a result, several of them have decided to pull their children out of school so that they won’t be exposed to the same danger.
